How to Fix High Ping in PUBG Mobile from South Africa

Why SA players sit on 140–190 ms, which server to actually pick from Johannesburg or Cape Town, and the fixes that genuinely help.

If you play PUBG Mobile from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or anywhere else in South Africa, you have almost certainly noticed that your ping sits somewhere between 140 and 190 ms while streamers you watch play on 15. You have probably also tried the standard advice — restart the router, close background apps, switch to 5 GHz — and found it made very little difference.

There is a reason for that, and it is worth understanding, because it changes which fixes are worth your time and which are a waste of money.

Why South African players sit on 140–190 ms

Ping is not a measure of how fast your internet is. It is a measure of how long a packet takes to travel from your phone to the game server and back. Bandwidth barely enters into it — a 200 Mbps fibre line and a 20 Mbps line to the same server will show nearly identical ping.

What matters is distance and the number of hops along the way. PUBG Mobile does not operate a server region in South Africa. The regions it offers — Asia, Europe, North America, South America, KRJP and Middle East — are all thousands of kilometres away, and your traffic reaches them over undersea cables.

Light in fibre travels at roughly two-thirds the speed of light in vacuum, which works out to about 200 km per millisecond. Johannesburg to Frankfurt is roughly 8 700 km in a straight line, and cables do not run in straight lines — the real path is closer to 11 000 km. That is around 55 ms in one direction before a single router touches the packet, so 110 ms for the round trip. Add routing hops, congestion and the last mile to your house, and 140 ms is simply what physics allows.

The important consequence: no router setting, no app, and no amount of money will get a South African player to 30 ms on PUBG Mobile. Anyone advertising that is lying. What you can do is eliminate the 40–80 ms of avoidable delay that most people are carrying on top of the unavoidable baseline — and that is a genuinely large improvement.

Which server to actually choose

PUBG Mobile lets you pick a server region, and for South African players the choice is usually between Europe and Middle East. Both are reachable on well-provisioned cable routes from South Africa.

Which is better depends on your ISP’s routing, not on geography, and the only way to know is to test. Do this properly:

  1. Set the server to Europe. Play three full matches, not one. Note the ping in the top corner during actual fights, not in the lobby.
  2. Switch to Middle East. Play three more matches under the same conditions — same time of evening, same connection.
  3. Compare, and pay attention to stability as much as the number. A steady 165 ms plays far better than one that swings between 120 and 220.

A stable connection matters more than a low one because the game predicts your movement based on consistent latency. When ping jumps around, that prediction breaks, and you get the rubber-banding where you appear to walk around a corner and then snap back.

Also test at the time you actually play. South African ISPs are noticeably more congested between roughly 19:00 and 22:00. A server that tests beautifully at 14:00 on a Sunday may behave differently on a Tuesday evening, and the evening result is the one that matters.

Fixes that genuinely help

Ordered by how much difference they actually make, in our experience, rather than by how often they get repeated online.

1. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and get closer to the router

The 2.4 GHz band is shared with your neighbours’ networks, your microwave, and most cheap smart devices. On a busy Johannesburg complex it can add 30–60 ms of jitter on its own. If your router broadcasts a 5 GHz network, connect to it. If you can play in the same room as the router, do.

2. Get everything else off the network while you play

One person streaming Netflix in 4K, or a phone silently downloading a system update, will do more damage to your ping than any setting inside the game. If your router supports QoS, prioritise your phone. If it does not, a conversation with the household works nearly as well.

3. Close background apps properly

Not because they use bandwidth — mostly they do not — but because they compete for CPU. On a mid-range phone, a browser with twenty tabs open in the background causes frame drops that feel exactly like lag, and players then blame their connection. This is the most commonly misdiagnosed problem in the game.

4. Turn off automatic updates and cloud backup during your session

Google Photos deciding to sync 400 pictures mid-match is a real and frequent cause of sudden ping spikes.

5. Reconsider mobile data

This one surprises people. On some South African networks, LTE routing to European servers is better than a congested home ADSL or entry-level fibre line, particularly in the evening. It is worth a genuine test rather than an assumption — though watch your data, since PUBG Mobile uses roughly 30–60 MB per hour.

6. Restart the router occasionally — but understand why

This helps when your router has been up for weeks and its NAT table is full, or its memory is fragmented. It does nothing at all for the underlying distance to the server. It is worth doing once a week, not once per bad match.

The honest answer on gaming VPNs

Services like ExitLag, NoPing and WTFast advertise lower ping for gamers, and a lot of South African players ask whether they work. The honest answer has two parts.

Usually they do not help, and often they hurt. A VPN adds a hop. Your traffic now goes to the VPN’s server first and then to the game server, which is a longer physical path than going directly. If your ISP’s routing to Europe is already sensible — and most South African fibre routing is — a VPN will add 20–40 ms rather than removing it.

Occasionally they do help, in one specific situation: when your ISP is routing your traffic badly. This does happen. If your traffic to a European server is being sent via North America because of a peering arrangement, you might be sitting on 280 ms when 160 was available, and a routing service that takes a direct path will genuinely fix that.

So the sensible approach is diagnostic, not promotional. If your ping is in the normal 140–190 band, a VPN will almost certainly make it worse and you should not buy one. If you are consistently above 250 ms while other people on the same ISP are not, you may have a routing problem, and a free trial of one of these services will tell you within an evening. Use the trial before you pay for anything.

Avoid free VPNs entirely for this. They are slower, they are more congested, and the business model of a free VPN is selling the traffic that passes through it. You are adding latency and a privacy problem to solve a problem you probably do not have.

How to play well on high ping

This is the part almost nobody writes about, and it is where the actual improvement is available. 160 ms is not a disability — it is a set of conditions you can play around once you understand what it changes.

Peeker’s advantage works against you

When a player rounds a corner, they see you before you see them, by roughly the sum of both players’ latency. On 160 ms against a 40 ms opponent, that gap is substantial and it is not in your favour. The practical response: stop holding tight angles and stop peeking aggressively. Hold wider angles that give you more reaction time, and let enemies commit into your sightline rather than trading peeks with them.

Lead moving targets more than feels right

What you see on screen is where the enemy was, not where they are. At 160 ms a player sprinting sideways has moved roughly a metre since the frame you are looking at. Aim ahead of them by noticeably more than seems correct — this feels wrong for about a week and then becomes automatic.

Favour weapons that forgive imprecision

High-fire-rate sprays punish latency because your correction arrives late into a fast pattern. Weapons with high per-shot damage and slower cadence — DMRs particularly — are more forgiving, because each individual decision matters more and there are fewer of them. Take fights from cover, not in the open

On high ping the delay between deciding to break contact and actually being behind cover is longer. Build in more margin than a low-ping player would.

One last thing worth saying plainly: a great many South African players who believe they have a ping problem actually have a frame rate problem. Stuttering, delayed input and shots that seem not to register all feel like lag, but they are frequently caused by a phone throttling under heat or running graphics settings above what it can sustain.
