What actually determines frame rate — and which specs to look for under R6 000 before you spend money on a new phone.

Before anything else: a better phone will not make you better at PUBG Mobile. It will remove a handicap, which is a different and smaller thing. Plenty of Conqueror players are on mid-range hardware, and plenty of people with flagship phones are stuck in Gold.

That said, a phone that drops to 25 fps in a fight is genuinely costing you fights, and it is worth knowing what to look for so you spend money on the things that matter rather than the things that appear on the box.

What actually determines your frame rate

In rough order of importance:

  1. The chipset (SoC). This is nearly the whole story. The GPU inside it renders every frame.
  2. Sustained thermal performance. How long the phone can maintain that speed before heat forces it to slow down. Matters enormously and is almost never advertised.
  3. Display refresh rate. A 90 or 120 Hz screen makes aiming feel noticeably smoother — but only if the chipset can actually push those frames.
  4. RAM. Enough matters, more than enough does nothing. 6 GB is comfortable, 8 GB is plenty.
  5. Touch sampling rate. How often the screen registers your finger. Higher is better and it is the difference between a phone feeling responsive or slightly mushy.
  6. Storage type. Affects load times, not gameplay.

What does not matter for PUBG Mobile: camera specifications, megapixels, screen resolution beyond 1080p, 5G support, and the phone’s brand. None of these affect a single frame. Resolution in particular works against you — a higher-resolution screen is more pixels for the same GPU to render.

The spec checklist

When you are looking at a phone, check these six things in this order. If the first two are wrong, nothing else rescues it.

Reading chipset names without being fooled

Phone marketing is designed to make weak chipsets sound strong. Two rules cut through most of it.

The series number matters more than the model number. With Qualcomm Snapdragon, the first digit is the tier: 8-series is flagship, 7-series is upper mid-range, 6-series is mid-range, 4-series is entry level. A newer 6-series chip is generally not faster than an older 7-series one for gaming, however recent it is. The same logic applies to MediaTek Dimensity, where the thousands digit indicates the tier.

A big number in the name is not a big GPU. Manufacturers reuse and rebrand chipsets across generations, and a phone advertised as having an "octa-core gaming processor" may be running an entry-level part. Look up the exact chipset model before buying, not the marketing name on the box.

Thermal throttling: the problem nobody mentions

This is the most underrated factor in mobile gaming, and it explains a frustration a lot of players have without knowing the cause.

Your phone can run at full speed for a few minutes. Then it gets hot, and to protect itself it reduces clock speeds — sometimes by 30–40%. In PUBG Mobile terms, your first match runs beautifully at 60 fps and your third runs at 35 with stutters. Nothing is broken; the phone is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

A thin phone with a large chipset and no cooling will throttle harder than a slightly thicker phone with a vapour chamber. This is why gaming-branded phones are physically chunkier, and it is a real engineering trade-off rather than marketing.

What actually reduces throttling:

  • Take the case off while you play. Free, and genuinely effective — a thick silicone case is an insulator.
  • Don't charge while gaming. Charging generates significant heat on top of the gaming load. If you must, use a slow charger rather than fast charging.
  • Play somewhere cool. Ambient temperature matters. A South African summer afternoon is genuinely a worse gaming environment than the same evening.
  • Lower graphics one notch below what the phone allows. Running Smooth + Extreme instead of Balanced + High keeps the chipset cooler and the frame rate steadier for longer.
  • A clip-on cooling fan. These look silly and they do work, particularly on phones that throttle early.

Fix your current phone before you buy a new one

Work through this list first. A significant share of people who think they need a new phone do not.

  1. Set graphics to Smooth and frame rate as high as the phone offers. Smooth looks worse and plays better. Every competitive player uses low graphics settings; it is not a compromise, it is the correct choice.
  2. Free up storage. A phone with under 10% free storage slows down measurably. Clear it to at least 20% free.
  3. Close background apps properly — actually close them, not just switch away. Background apps compete for the CPU your game needs.
  4. Turn off battery saver while playing. It deliberately caps performance. Some phones enable it automatically below 20%, which is exactly when your frame rate mysteriously halves.
  5. Restart the phone before a session. Clears memory pressure and accumulated background processes.
  6. Clear the game's cache in Android settings, or reinstall if it has been installed through many seasons of updates.
  7. Check for an "extreme performance" or game mode in your phone's settings. Most Android phones have one, and most people never turn it on.

Do this before spending anything. Between low graphics settings, free storage, battery saver off and the case removed, it is common to gain 15–20 fps on a phone somebody was about to replace.

Buying in South Africa

A few practical notes for buying locally, whichever model you land on.

  • Check the exact chipset before buying, not the marketing name. The same phone model is sometimes sold with different chipsets in different regions. Search the specific model number against a spec database and confirm.
  • Contract deals are rarely good value for gaming phones. Work out the total over 24 months and compare against the cash price. The difference is often substantial.
  • Consider last year's upper mid-range over this year's entry level. A one-year-old 7-series chipset will outperform a brand-new 4-series one comfortably, and usually costs less.
  • Buy from a retailer with a returns policy. Thermal behaviour is very hard to judge from a spec sheet. Being able to return a phone that throttles badly after twenty minutes is worth more than a small discount from a grey importer.
  • Be careful with second-hand. Battery health degrades, and a phone with a worn battery throttles harder. If buying used, check battery health and ask to run the game for fifteen minutes before paying.
