Erangel Guide: Loot Routes, Rotations and Compound Fights
The classic 8×8 map broken down — where to land for a real loadout, how to rotate without dying to the open ground, and which compounds are worth contesting.
Erangel is the original map and still the one most matches are played on. It is 8×8 km, mostly open, and it punishes bad movement more than bad aim. Almost everything that makes Erangel difficult comes from one design fact: there is a lot of ground between buildings, and most of it has no cover at all.
The shape of the map
Erangel is split by a river running roughly north to south through the eastern third, with the Military Base sitting on its own island in the south. Understanding three things about the layout will fix most of your rotation problems:
- The centre is the high-traffic zone. Pochinki, School and Rozhok sit close together in the middle of the map, which means circles frequently pull toward them and squads frequently collide there.
- The edges are quiet but expensive. Landing at Zharki, Kameshki or Lipovka is safe, but you will often be rotating 3 km and arriving late.
- The south island is a trap without a plan. Military Base has excellent loot and two bridges out. If the circle goes north and you are still on the island, you are committing to one of them.
Where to land, by what you want
| Location | Loot | Contested | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military Base | Excellent | Very high | Best loot on the map, and the hardest landing. Expect three or more squads |
| Georgopol containers | Excellent | Very high | Dense, vertical, chaotic. Great if you want fights immediately |
| Pochinki | Good | Very high | The classic hot drop. Central, so you rarely need to rotate far afterwards |
| School / Rozhok | Good | High | Small area, many players. School especially is a coin flip in the first thirty seconds |
| Mylta Power | Very good | Medium | Strong loot for how quiet it usually is. Awkwardly placed in the east |
| Yasnaya Polyana | Good | Medium | Large enough that two squads can land without immediately meeting |
| Quarry | Medium | Low | Awkward vertical terrain, decent loot, usually calm |
| Gatka / Zharki | Medium | Low | Reliable full loadout, long rotations. Good for rank grinding |
| Primorsk | Good | Low | Far south-west corner. Very quiet, very far from most circles |
| Stalber | Medium | Low | High ground in the north. Excellent position, mediocre loot |
The general rule for Erangel: if you want a full loadout without a fight, land 500–800 metres off the flight path in a small cluster of houses. Erangel’s scattered farm buildings are reliable enough that you will find a rifle, armour and healing without contesting anything.
Rotating without dying to open ground
This is the Erangel skill. More players die crossing fields than in any building on the map.
Move early, always
The blue zone gives you ample time in the early circles and very little later. Use the early ones. If you are already inside the next circle when it appears, you get to hold cover facing the people arriving late — and on Erangel they will be arriving across open ground.
Use the ridgelines
Erangel’s terrain is gently rolling rather than flat, and that matters. Moving along the low side of a ridge hides you from an entire half of the map. Look at the contours before you move and pick a route that keeps high ground between you and where you think people are, rather than the shortest line.
Vehicles are cover and a liability at once
A vehicle crosses ground quickly, which is exactly what you want on Erangel — but it is audible from a long way off and it tells everyone where you are going. The compromise most good players use: drive most of the way, stop early, and walk the last 200–300 metres. Never park at the building you are about to enter; park behind it or short of it.
Do not cross a field because it is shorter
If the choice is 400 metres through open grass or 700 metres along a treeline, take the treeline. The extra thirty seconds costs you nothing in a circle you moved into early.
Fighting in compounds
Erangel’s towns are clusters of small separate buildings rather than one large structure, and this shapes how fights work.
- Do not chase into a building. Whoever is inside hears you coming and picks their angle. Hold outside, watch the door, and make them leave — you have the whole outside, they have one room.
- Watch the windows above you. Erangel’s two-storey houses give a big advantage to whoever is upstairs. If you are approaching a compound, the upper windows are the first thing to check, not the doors.
- Grenades are worth more here than anywhere else. Small rooms with one entrance are exactly what frags are for. Most players carry them all match and throw none.
- Take the walls between buildings. Pochinki in particular has low walls that let you move between houses without exposing yourself to the whole town. Use them rather than sprinting down the middle of the street.
The bridge problem
Two bridges connect the southern Military Base island to the mainland, and they are the most reliable ambush points in the game. Squads camp them because the geometry is perfect: a single approach, no cover, and everyone crossing is in a vehicle making noise.
If the circle pulls north while you are on the island, you have three options and it is worth deciding early rather than at the last moment:
- Cross early, before anyone has set up. The safest option and the one most players skip.
- Swim. Slow and exposed, but it avoids the bridges completely, and swimming underwater makes you very hard to hit. Viable if you start early enough.
- Take a boat. Fast, loud, and it can land you anywhere on the coast rather than at a predictable point.
The one thing that does not work is arriving at a bridge in the last thirty seconds of a closing zone in a loud vehicle. That is the situation every camper is waiting for.
Late-circle terrain
The final circles on Erangel usually land in one of three kinds of terrain, and each demands something different.
- Open field. The most common and the most brutal. Prone in tall grass genuinely works, and smoke grenades become the most valuable item in your inventory. Position on any small rise — even a metre of elevation shows you everyone lying flat.
- Town. Buildings are strong cover but they are also traps once the circle shrinks past them. Hold a building at the edge of the final circle, not one in the middle, so you are not forced out at the last moment.
- Hills and treeline. The best case. Take the reverse slope of a hill so you are hidden from most of the circle, and hold the crest.
Carry smoke grenades on Erangel specifically. More than on any other map, final circles here happen in the open, and smoke is the only cover you can create. Two smokes let you revive a teammate, cross a field, or break a sniper’s angle — and almost nobody picks them up.
Erangel rewards patience more than mechanics. If you are grinding rank, this is the map to do it on — see the rank system guide for why placement beats kills, and the landing spots guide for drop choices across every map.
